New for 2012 – wheelchair escorts

Last year, we were fortunate to have one very competitive crank chair athlete, although we were not especially prepared to support her.  Starting in 2012, we are going to create a new standard for wheelchair support in the Miami Valley’s first chair-friendly 5k run/walk event.

The Harrigan’s entry forms now have a field for wheelchairs so we can be fully prepared to support each of you.  We know some people use chairs competitively, and some don’t but still would like to come out for the experience. For safety, individuals participating competitively will start the race ahead of the main field, and individuals using wheelchairs that are participating in a non-competitive fashion will start after the main field.

One of our great charities, JDRF, fields a bicycle riding team. They have agreed to provide a rider to escort each participant using a chair – to lead you through the course since markings are painted on the street & may not be very visible and to clear the way (if necessary) for you.

Harrigan’s has wheelchair access, as does the registration tent, so there is no reason not to join us on March 10th. Know of someone that uses a wheelchair and would like to come out for the fun? Let them know they are welcome, and that we are ready to support them!
